PV868 creative investigations on stroboscopic light, binaural beats and interference patterns

PV868 is an experimental creation and performance aimed at producing an audiovisual feed/stimulus which would allow a peculiar effect of moving visual patterns to emerge directly in the brain of the viewer/listener. This stimulus is generated in real-time by a combination of flickering video, in the form of abstract lights and color gradients, coupled with synchronized synthetic sounds (binaural beats) diff used in a surround quadrophonic system. These elements are always recombined in different ways by means of ad-hoc created software, controlled by TeZ with a “touch” wi-fi remote device.

The video projection is used in an unconventional way as “intermedium” between the light and the brain. The interferences between the stroboscopic light and the brainwaves, combined with the entrainment of the binaural beats, cause a different vision for each individual viewer. The audiovisual composition is introduced by a spatialized sound in complete darkness to allow the relaxation of the retina and to prepare the audience for an immersive experience. This investigation was inspired by the readings of John Geiger’s “Chapel of Extreme Experience” and W. G. Walter’s “The Living Brain”.

You should NOT attend to this show if already aware of being epileptic!

Maurizio Martinucci (aka TeZ) is an Italian interdisciplinary artist and independent researcher living and working in Amsterdam. He has collaborated with, among other, Adi Newton, Scanner, Kim Cascone, Saverio Evangelista, Taylor Deupree, Sonia Cillari, Chris Salter, Honor Harger, Luca Spagnoletti and Domenico Sciajno. He uses technology as a means with which to explore perceptual effects and the relationship between sound, light and space. He focuses primarily on generative compositions with spatialised sound for live performances and installations. In his works he adopts custom developed software and hardware, featuring original sonification and visualization techniques to investigate and magnify subtle vibrational phenomena. In recent years his research has extended to the ideation and creation of specific architectural structures and unconventional sound and light propagation methods to enhance immersivity and multisensory perception.
