THEME 2018
The theme of this years competition is STUPOR
(from Latin stupere "be stunned or stupefied")

Those in a stuporous state are rigid, mute and only appear to be conscious, as the eyes are open and follow surrounding objects. In such a state the inner emotional condition may be opposite to the outer appearance, in other words an intense emotion and agitated state inside is not communicated to the outside. As an polemical condensed image for dissociation and non resonance in society and art this image is nucleus for aesthetic production and core motive for the 2018 competition. The ambivalence of the topic results from the negative clinical significance of today and the original Latin meaning, because "Stunned or stupefied" is a comprehensible expectation towards art. The kind of art that is being sought is shocking, but not as the "latest MUST SEE" of an hedonistic correct industry of enthusiasm and acclamation, to which the media art market humbly belongs too. In this respect, stupor as psychiatric symptom and (body) position is a symbol for failure and denial, expression of self-assertion against an expectation of "hip". The disbelief – and the nihilistic denial towards the neo liberal expectations of optimization, production, and adaptation – means not perceiving and sorting out on the sex, labor, housing, or – of course – the art market too.

It means turning away from the idea of progress and improvement as the task of artistic production, in particular for the elimination of the other, the evil, obsolete, and of the sick and dysfunctional; Subversive to the assertion of an intellectually better being in art, being on the "right" side in conformity to marketing demands. As a shelter of awareness and consciousness, the term Stupor is the stance of refusing to accept the presumption that everyone must participate. Freedom is that I don't have to participate.
Therapy is denied. However such art may look like, as an aesthetic position it deserves our appreciation.
