THEOREM 8.1
3 channel video Installation, 2015
THEOREM 8.1 explores the intersection of art and mathematics. It investigates the artistic possibilities of the mathematical concept of orthogonal projection. Given a set of digital images from the Jean Luc Godard film Alphaville (1965), the projection decomposes any source image of those dictionary images. The elements of the film are brightened or darkened so that their mixture approximates as closely as possible the source image. The aim of this project is to open up this technological black box, to foreground the computational process involved, and to experiment with its artistic possibilities.

(Mathematical Advisor: Felipe Cucker This work has been partially funded by City University of Hong Kong Research Projects #9610322 and #7004725.)

HECTOR RODRIQUEZ is a digital artist and theorist whose work explores the unique possibilities of computational technologies to reconfigure the history and aesthetics of moving images. He was Artistic Director of the Microwave International Media Art Festival, and is now a member of the Writing Machine Collective. He currently teaches at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. He has taught courses on art and science, game studies, generative art, software art, media art theory, contemporary art, and film history.

REMISSION
The videos show Statements of stuttering persons at the National Stuttering Association conference. All the moments of stuttering are cut off in one video. Cut pieces form the content of the second video.

CLASSIFIED ORBITS
Based on the observations of (hobby) astronomers, there are classified satellites in the earth orbit, whose presence is classified as secret. However, their probable whereabouts can be precisely calculated using available data.

SOUNDS OF SATELLITES
Space may be an anechoic place, but it is no longer empty. An expansive sound installation allows the visitor to experience the incorporeal but constant existence of men-made objects flying above our heads.

THE ZENBOT PRIME KNOTS SERIES
Made with a “Zenbot” CNC-machine, with ink and brush instead of a cutting tool, in the tradition of Zen Buddhist sumi-e painting exploring the robot arm’s artistic sensibilities in terms of chance vs. control.
